Google is expanding the Noto 3D emoji set from Pixel devices to the Android ecosystem. Details of the new design are in our news.
Google has begun rolling out its new Noto 3D emoji set, which it has been working on for a long time and aims to enrich the user experience, beyond Pixel devices and across the entire Android ecosystem. According to a detailed statement released by the Google Design team, the transition from classic 2D designs to a 3D appearance was carried out with meticulous craftsmanship to ensure that each character takes shape in the digital world without losing its spirit.
This innovative emoji set, available on Google apps and devices from many different manufacturers, is emphasized to have been developed with a design philosophy that prioritizes emotional clarity in digital communication.
Emotional Clarity Prioritized in the Design Process
Google designers believe that emojis should not be merely miniature copies of beings in the natural world. For this reason, while developing Noto 3D, an approach was adopted that was free from complex anatomical details that slow down the human brain’s processing of feelings. It was found that details such as pupils or nasal passages turned into visual noise on small-scale screens.
Therefore, it was decided to include a maximum of three basic details to preserve the identity of each character.
The team also faced various design challenges, such as how the backs of the characters would look when transitioning from 2D to 3D. For example, it was noted that figures such as poodle dogs with missing legs were remodeled.
Google’s main goal in this process was to combine the spirit provided by illustration with the volume offered by 3D technology to provide users with the clearest possible expression.
A Full Silhouette Strategy Was Determined for Animal Figures
Research has shown that users empathize more with figures that have full silhouettes. Especially in animal figures, elements such as posture, paws, and body position better reflect the character’s intention and personality.
In light of these findings, Google has redesigned animal emojis, particularly the raccoon, presenting them to users in a more complete and vibrant form. Moving away from the floating head illusion, this new design language aims to create a more holistic visual language in the Android world.
Available on a Wide Range of Devices
This widespread rollout, which began after the Pixel 11 launch, now covers devices from many valuable brands such as Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, iQOO, HONOR, TECNO, Infinix, itel, and Motorola. Users can explore the entire comprehensive emoji library offered by Google through the developer pages. With this move, Google aims to provide all users in the Android ecosystem with a more modern and balanced visual communication experience.
