Google’s new research reveals that artificial intelligence technologies are playing a supportive role rather than completely automating the workforce.
A new study conducted by Google reveals valuable insights into the impact of AI technologies on the business world. The study analyzes how AI is integrated into existing business processes by examining Gemini usage data.
The findings show that AI is more in a supporting role, assisting existing tasks rather than completely taking over the workforce. Researchers note that the use of AI remains quite limited in most jobs.
AI Integration in the Business World
Google ATLAS researchers measured how deeply Gemini was used by examining job tasks in the O*NET database. Only 21% of all job tasks exceeded the defined minimum interaction threshold and were classified as “Gemini tasks”.
In 29% of professions, not even a single job task reached this meaningful usage threshold. This reveals that these professional groups are currently only minimally affected by the AI revolution.
In another 30% of professions, less than a quarter of tasks are performed with Gemini. This information proves that employees still handle the vast majority of their work themselves.
Only 3% of professions use Gemini systematically for more than three-quarters of tasks. Software quality assurance analysts, human resources specialists, and document management specialists are among the groups that benefit most from AI.
Researchers emphasize that AI currently plays a complementary role to existing jobs. It is stated that the technology is useful for a reasonable subset of jobs, but it does not completely replace the tasks performed by humans.
It is stated that this situation may change with new artificial intelligence advancements in the future. However, it is also considered a possibility that new workflows will maintain the complementary relationship between employees and artificial intelligence systems.
Cognitive Tasks Take Center Stage
Google researchers also examined in detail which medical missions Gemini users requested from the model. Cognitive missions, which fundamentally require thinking, constitute 86 percent of Gemini interactions by volume.
In contrast, missions requiring interpersonal interaction and manual tasks are less common in Gemini usage compared to their general prevalence in the workplace. Artificial intelligence is particularly preferred in cognitive tasks that require low expertise and are not routine.
