Sony Santa Monica made an important statement following the controversial news that physical media production would be stopped on the PlayStation front. The studio has officially confirmed that their new game, God of War Laufey, will be available in physical disc format.

Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Santa Monica Studio announced the new God of War game for PlayStation 5 last month. Although the exact release date of the game has not been shared yet, with the decision on the physical disc, it has been confirmed that the production will meet the players before January 2028.

New Development in the Physical Media Era

In a recent announcement, Sony announced that the physical disc period will end in new games produced for PlayStation consoles as of January 2028. It was stated that all new productions to be released after this date will be offered only in digital format.

Santa Monica Studio confirmed in a post on its social media accounts that there will be a physical disc option for God of War Laufey. This decision is of critical importance for players who prefer to make physical collections.

Game Details and Future Plans

God of War Laufey was introduced with a gameplay footage of more than 20 minutes at the State of Play event held last month. Representing a new chapter in the series, the production centers on the character of Faye, Kratos’ Scandinavian wife and Atreus’ mother.

While Ariel Lawrence is the director of the game, Santa Monica Studio Creative President Cory Barlog is also involved in the project.

The duo will share behind-the-scenes stories and new character details of the game at the San Diego Comic-Con 2026 event to be held on Friday, July 24.
