iam8bit announced via X that two of its laptops were stolen. These devices contained demo versions of Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2.

Tessera Studios announced that two laptops and a Steam Deck device went missing from their booth in the Indie Area. The company emphasized that the devices contained personal and critical company information.

Laley and iam8bit’s booths were located in Hall 4.1, right next to the west entrance. Tessera Studios was in Hall 10.2, indicating that the thieves focused on different areas of the exhibition grounds.

The cost of the stolen equipment represents a significant financial loss, especially for smaller independent developers. However, the main concern is the risk of unreleased game versions on the devices being leaked.

Security Measures and Developers’ Concerns

Developers say that the leak of these versions online could be devastating for their projects. Even with backups, the uncontrolled release of stolen data creates a major security vulnerability.

Gamescom organizers issued a statement following the incident, stating that the police have been notified and investigations are ongoing.
