Danger of Fake Notepad++ for Mac

Danger of Fake Notepad++ for Mac

Notepad++ creator Don Ho announced that the application developed for macOS was a trademark infringement. The application is going to change its name and brand soon.

Don Ho, creator of the popular Windows code editor Notepad++, announced that an application developed for macOS is using the Notepad++ trademark without permission. Ho stated that the application in question has no connection with the original project.

Don Ho stated in his blog post that this macOS application is unauthorized and misleading. Emphasizing that this situation is disrespectful to both the project and the users, Ho underlined that Notepad++ has never released an official macOS version.

Brand Renewal Process Begins

Following this development, Andrey Letov, who developed the macOS port, announced that he would act in coordination with Don Ho. Letov announced that he will change the brand and website of the application in the coming days.

With the upcoming 1.0.6 version, the application will have a new logo, a different name and possibly a new domain name. Letov stated that he aims to make the transition process as smooth as possible for existing users.

Notepad++ is known as an open source text and code editor that has been used on the Windows platform for many years. Interest among Mac users for a version of this software is giving to such third-party initiatives.

Beware of Unofficial Versions

Don Ho reiterated clearly that there is no official macOS version of Notepad++. The message that users should be careful about such unofficial applications stands out.

Letov, the developer of the application, stated that he will take the necessary steps for the brand to gain its own identity. In this process, it was determined as the main priority not to victimize the existing users of the application.

In the software world, protecting the naming rights of open source projects continues to be a critical issue for developer communities. This debut from Don Ho shows his determination to preserve the originality of the project.

With the update that will be released in the coming days, it is eagerly awaited to see what path the application will follow with its new identity.

In your opinion, how important is the approval of official developers in porting popular open source software to different platforms such as macOS?
