OpenAI started to offer remote access and control to the Codex tool with the new feature it added to the ChatGPT mobile application.
OpenAI is integrating the Codex tool into the ChatGPT app so developers can manage their coding workflows from their mobile devices. This new feature allows users to remotely control long-term coding tasks ongoing on their computers via their phones.
Currently in preview, this capability will be generally available later in the year. This move comes after Anthropic released a similar remote control feature for Claude Code.
Remote code management via ChatGPT
Codex’s user base has grown rapidly, from three million weekly users to four million users in less than a month. OpenAI chose to include this integration within the existing ChatGPT application rather than a separate application.
This strategic choice seems to be linked to the company’s plan to develop a desktop super application in the future that will bring capabilities such as ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas under one roof. The company states that a new rhythm of collaboration has emerged as agents take on longer-term work.
Users can review code outputs and approve or reject commands via the mobile application. It also becomes possible to control GPT model selection and start new encoding tasks.
Security and platform support
OpenAI states that Codex uses a secure relay layer to ensure the security of the system. This structure ensures that trusted machines remain accessible across devices without being exposed directly to the internet.
The company takes an Apple-focused approach by offering this new feature to Mac users at the first stage. It is stated that Windows support will be added to the system soon.
