Attack on Ubuntu by Iranian Group

Attack on Ubuntu by Iranian Group

Canonical is experiencing access issues due to a DDoS attack by 313 Team. Ubuntu 26 downloads and updates are affected.

Canonical, the developer of Ubuntu Linux, faced a large-scale cyber attack. A large portion of the company’s infrastructure is experiencing access issues due to a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic Cyber Resistance group, known as 313 Team and operating in Iraq. The group requested a virtual meeting from Canonical employees, threatening that the attacks would continue.

Effects of the Attack and Security Situation

As a result of the attack, Canonical’s main website, as well as Ubuntu download and update servers around the world, were slowed down or completely disabled. Associated services such as Launchpad, Snap store and Canonical SSO were also negatively affected.

Despite the disruptions, no security breaches were reported in package repositories or ISO files. It is stated that the files are safe as long as users access the download points.

Ubuntu 26 Access and Alternative Methods

There are different solutions for users who have difficulty accessing Ubuntu 26 version, package updates or WSL2 image. It is possible to access the necessary files through hundreds of mirror servers other than Canonical.

Users can check the mirror list on launchpad.net or review the records on the Wayback Machine in case these links do not work. Additionally, accessing desktop and server versions via torrent clients stands out as an alternative.

Although some technology experts suggest that this attack may be linked to the Copy Fail vulnerability, these claims have not yet been confirmed.

Disruption of update processes is considered a surmountable obstacle for system administrators. What do you think about this cyber attack experienced by Canonical?
