Apple M5 Ultra Performance Revealed: 41% Difference from M3 Ultra

The first Geekbench 7 results reflecting the GPU performance of Apple’s newly developed M5 Ultra chip have sparked curiosity in the technology world. This information reveals how the Apple M5 Ultra performance test results show a change compared to the previous generation. This powerful processor, found in the new Mac Studio models, achieved a remarkable success by reaching 360,019 points in the Metal test. The M3 Ultra, on the other hand, lagged behind the new generation with 255,009 points in the same test.

This difference between the two chips indicates an increase of approximately 41% in graphics processing capacity. This means a significant speed increase, especially in professional workflows requiring high graphics power.

Technical Details and Architecture of the M5 Ultra

Tests reflected in the Geekbench database were performed on a Mac Studio with a 36-core M5 Ultra chip and 256 GB of combined memory. The processor has 12 super cores and 24 performance cores on the CPU side.

The full configuration of the chip can reach up to 80 cores on the GPU side. In addition, the combined memory capacity reaches 512 GB, while the memory bandwidth increases to 1.2 TB/s.

The M5 Ultra is the first M-series chip to adopt a quad-die architecture with Apple’s new generation UltraFusion technology. This architecture maximizes the efficiency of the processor on both the CPU and GPU sides.

Neural Accelerators added to the GPU cores also provide valuable support in AI-based processes. Compared to the M3 Ultra, the 50% increase in memory bandwidth is noteworthy.

The technical data shared for the new Mac Studio promises up to 1.3 times higher multi-threaded CPU performance compared to the M3 Ultra. On the graphics side, this increase can reach up to 1.8 times.

The Media Engine unit has the capacity to play up to 33 8K ProRes 422 30 FPS video streams simultaneously. This feature stands out as a detail that will significantly speed up the workflow for video editing professionals.

CPU Performance and Future Expectations

Geekbench results for the CPU also support the success on the graphics side. The 36-core configuration scores 3,774 points in single-core and 52,516 points in multi-core.

The M3 Ultra’s Geekbench 7 averages are around 2,920 in single-core and 39,059 in multi-core. This information proves a performance increase of approximately 30% in single-core and 35% in multi-core.

Since Metal is a graphics and computing API developed specifically for Apple platforms, these results cannot be directly compared with NVIDIA or AMD cards. Tests such as OpenCL and Vulkan will show the chip’s position against other architectures more clearly.

It should be noted that the current information is based on a single test record. Variables such as cooling conditions and operating system version may affect the final performance results.

More comprehensive test results are expected to emerge as retail models become more widespread. The new Mac Studio, announced with M5 Max and M5 Ultra options, will go on sale on September 22nd.
