Thanks to the new “iPhone Handoff” feature, which will be available with iOS 27, a single phone number and cellular line can be actively used on two different iPhones at the same time. This step, which will especially please those who carry more than one device for business and personal use, redefines the boundaries of eSIM technology.

What is iPhone Handoff and How Does it Work?

According to the details that have emerged, the new infrastructure can be easily configured directly from the “Cellular” menu in iOS settings. During the setup process, users designate one of their devices as the “main iPhone” and the other as the “secondary device”. At the heart of the system is a special synchronization logic developed by Apple on its eSIM architecture.

When the process begins, the user’s primary eSIM profile remains on the primary phone, while a secure “clone” eSIM profile is assigned to the paired second iPhone model. Thanks to this intelligent pairing, users can seamlessly switch between the two devices in seconds while maintaining the same phone number and cellular plan. Incoming calls and SMS notifications reach both devices without any problems.

Operator Support Will Be Required

Details discovered in Xcode 27 code indicate that this feature is not limited to a software update; it also requires technical infrastructure compatibility on the mobile operator side. Initially, T-Mobile in the US market and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are among the operators that will begin supporting this new dual-device infrastructure.

This feature, which eliminates the need for carrying physical SIM cards or relying on expensive twin SIM solutions offered by operators for professionals using two different iPhone models, further strengthens the integration power of the Apple ecosystem.
