1.5 Billion Dollar Data Center Investment from Google

1.5 Billion Dollar Data Center Investment from Google

Google is expanding its data center campus in Alabama with an investment of $1.5 billion and is assuming all of the power costs.

Google announced a new investment plan of $1.5 billion to expand its information center campus in Jackson County, Alabama. The company announced that it will undertake the entire power costs of the facility within the scope of these expansion works, which are planned to be completed within the next two years.

This step is in line with the White House’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge commitment, which aims to prevent local residents’ power bills from rising. Google states that it will directly cover all infrastructure and power expenses arising from the operational activities of the information center.

Data Center Expansion and Power Strategy

Google plans to switch to nuclear power to meet the increasing power needs of its data center. The company aims to provide up to 50 megawatts of pure power to information centers in Alabama and Tennessee, thanks to the partnership it established with Kairos Power and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in August 2025.

This collaboration allows Google to receive power from its own private grid, reducing its dependence on local power sources. In this way, it is aimed not to affect the power prices of other consumers in the region.

The company also allocates resources to various social responsibility projects in order to strengthen its relations with the local community. In this context, a 2 million dollar Power Impact Fund was established in partnership with TVA and CAANEAL, while a donation of 550 thousand dollars is made for STEM kits for local students.

Social Reinforcement and Future Vision

Google, which has maintained its presence in Jackson County since 2018, operates on the site of a former coal power plant. The company says that new investments will increase the infrastructure capacity in the region and provide employment for thousands of people.

Google officials emphasize that sustainable growth is only possible with the development of local communities. The investments are aimed to make long-term contributions to the region by supporting not only technological infrastructure but also local businesses and education projects.

What do you think about the effects of this huge investment by Google on the regional economy and power sustainability?
