YouTube Music Design is Getting a Redesign

YouTube Music is testing a full-screen cover art feature in the Now Playing interface. Check out the details of the new design and its impact on user experience.

YouTube Music has begun testing a full-screen album cover art feature on the “Now Playing” screen, aiming to make the user experience more visually immersive. Following the interface redesign earlier this year, this new test aims to make album covers completely fill the screen. Thanks to this design change, YouTube Music users will be able to view album covers without any borders, making their music listening experience more engaging. With this update in the testing phase, the company aims to adopt an aesthetic approach particularly suited to the popularity of vertical image formats.

  • YouTube Music is testing a full-screen cover art feature in the “Now Playing” interface.
  • In the new design, album art is optimized to cover the entire screen.
  • Users can switch between full-screen and standard square views by tapping the cover art.
  • In current tests, adjustments have been made to the design so that the album art does not remain behind the controls.

New Design Changes the Visual Experience

The tested design spreads cover art across the entire screen area, including status bars and navigation bars.

Album photos, which were initially square, take on a rectangular structure with this new format. While this causes some images to be cropped, it offers viewers a wider visual area.

YouTube Music, with this new interface design, exhibits an approach similar to the aesthetic understanding of Google Play Music.

User Controls and Interface Updated

With the latest adjustments, album artwork is no longer located behind the playback controls and progress bar. This small but effective change allows the user to see the album artwork more clearly.

In addition, the backgrounds of the motion buttons have been made transparent, and the color theme application taken from the album artwork has been removed from this screen. These changes give the application a cleaner and more modern look.

This full-screen design is currently in the testing phase and has not yet been widely rolled out to all users.

The application of a similar full-screen effect while viewing music tracks emphasizes YouTube’s commitment to vertical image formats. YouTube Music plans to support users’ inclination towards visual content by bringing a viewing experience similar to “Shorts” to the music listening screen. Whether these innovations will be permanent and when they will be generally available is not yet clear.
