WhatsApp is working on a new passkey and device pairing feature for the Android platform in order to make users’ access to their accounts safer and faster. This innovation, which is in the development stage, aims to offer a modern alternative to the classical QR code scanning method.

Users will be able to complete the process in a much more practical way by using their biometric data or screen lock information when connecting their devices. This feature, which is not currently available even to beta users, is planned to be included in the stable version with future updates.

Passkey Technology Raises Security Standards

Passkey technology offers a much higher level of security compared to classic SMS verification codes. WhatsApp aims to take this technology beyond account creation processes and integrate it into the cross-device relationship building experience. In this way, it becomes difficult for third parties to gain unauthorized access to accounts.

Device Pairing Process Becomes More Practical

When the new feature is enabled, users will be able to use the passkey stored in their password manager when they want to connect a device. WhatsApp will display a confirmation screen to verify that the relationship request was personally initiated by the account owner. When the user presses the “Continue” button, the relationship process will be completed quickly.

QR Code Method Continues to be Used

The company is not retiring the standard QR code matching method. Instead, an additional option is offered for users. In some cases, in order to maximize security, the system may still ask the user to scan the QR code as an additional verification step.

Thanks to the new contact procedure, the necessity of scanning a physical QR code is eliminated.

Users Configure Passkey Settings in Advance

In order to benefit from this new feature, users must have a passkey in their accounts. If users have not made this configuration before, they can simply create a key by following the steps “Settings > Account > Passkeys” through the application. For this process, it is sufficient to have a compatible password manager and an active screen lock on the device.

Future Updates Bring New Features

Currently, there is no official schedule for when WhatsApp will make this feature publicly available. While the development process continues, beta testers are expected to experience this innovation first. WhatsApp continues to be determined to improve the user experience with more modern solutions.
