The popular messaging app WhatsApp is rolling out an animated emoji reaction feature for Android users, making reactions to messages more vibrant. This new feature, which began testing with WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.33.4, allows users to have their chosen emojis move with a short animation when reacting to a message.

Currently enabled for a select group of beta users, the feature aims to take the messaging experience to a more engaging level. If users don’t like these animations, which are powered by the Lottie library, they can revert to a static view via the application settings.

Animated Reactions Enrich the Messaging Experience

Animated emojis, previously only used in a limited way within messages, are now also active in the reaction bar. When users long-press a message and select a reaction, if an animation has been defined for that emoji, the reaction instantly moves and appears on top of the message. This feature increases visual consistency within the application, making user interactions more fun.

WhatsApp is making animated reactions a standard option to personalize the user experience.

Availability of the Feature is Gradually Increasing

The new feature is offered by WhatsApp as a default. Therefore, users can see animated results when reacting with supported emojis without needing to change any settings. However, it may take time for the feature to reach all users at the same time. Beta users who do not see animated reactions now are advised to check the most current version of the application on the Google Play Store.

Users Can Disable Animated Emojis

Not all users may like animated content. WhatsApp, taking this into consideration, offers a solution for its users. Thanks to a special option added with WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.11.10, users who wish can make all emojis static. When this setting is turned off, all animations in both messages and reactions are disabled.

The Number of Supported Emojis is Constantly Increasing

Currently, only certain emojis support the animated reaction feature. Initially offered with well-known emojis such as thumbs up, heart, smiley face, and clasped hands, this feature will be expanded over time. In the near future, more emojis such as fire, two hearts, and a smiley face with heart eyes will be added to the animated reaction list.

WhatsApp continues to work on new customization options, such as custom emoji reflections, in the future.

More Personalization Planned for the Future

Animated emojis are just one module of WhatsApp’s efforts to modernize the messaging experience. The company is also focusing on broader updates, such as custom emoji reflections being tested especially for WhatsApp Plus subscribers. These future updates, where users will be able to completely customize the reaction bar according to their preferences, will make communication more unique.
