WhatsApp is planning a significant change to its popular messaging app to improve user experience by integrating channels directly into the Chats tab. This new feature, currently under development for the Android platform, aims to make switching between private messages and the channels users follow much more practical.

Once this transition is complete, WhatsApp aims to completely remove the current Updates tab and move to a simpler interface. Still in beta, this new feature offers flexible configuration options allowing users to manage channels according to their preferences.

WhatsApp is Working on New Navigation Arrangements

WhatsApp has recently accelerated its efforts to make fundamental changes, particularly to the bottom navigation bar of the interface. The platform aims to provide users with faster access to the content they follow by moving channels to the Chats tab.

With this change, it is planned to bring together status updates and channels, which are currently located at the top of the Chats tab. Thus, the application will have a more balanced and user-centric interface design.

Users are testing three different configurations for Channels

The feature, which is under development, offers users three different options for managing their channels. The first option includes channels directly in the main chat list, listing them in the same place as other conversations.

The second option archives channels by default, allowing users to access this section whenever they want. Finally, the third option adds a dedicated “Channels” folder to the chat list, providing a more organized look. WhatsApp continues to test these configurations to understand which procedure is more efficient.

Updates Tab is being replaced by the Contacts Tab

With the channels being moved to the Chats tab, a significant space will be created in the application’s interface. Following this change, WhatsApp wants to make this area more functional by removing the Updates tab. At this point, the “Contacts” tab is expected to be brought back so that users can easily see their online contacts and quickly access their address book. This will allow users to manage their social interactions with far fewer steps.

New Feature Still in Testing Phase

This feature, discovered in the Android 2.26.39.1 beta version, is not yet open to widespread testing. WhatsApp aims to choose the configuration that will offer the best interface experience by taking user feedback into account.

Although an official release date has not yet been announced, this change is expected to be gradually rolled out to all users in the coming period. Users are already wondering how the inclusion of channels in the Chats tab will affect their daily messaging routines.
