A GTA 5 test using the XeniOS emulator on an iPhone 17 Pro Max was disappointing due to low frame rates and overheating problems.
Apple claims that the A19 Pro processor takes the gaming performance of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models to the next level. This powerful hardware led a user to try running the popular game GTA 5 on the device.
However, this test was only possible by running the game not locally, but through the XeniOS Xbox 360 emulator. The results show that the gaming experience was quite low-performing and inefficient.
Low frame rates and overheating issues
In this experiment conducted by Redditor “mertbaris01”, GTA 5 was successfully run on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Again, running the game through the emulation layer prevented it from providing a smooth experience despite the device’s hardware power.
While the game ran at 1280 x 720 resolution, the frame rate remained around 19-20 FPS on average. During helicopter tours around the city, this dropped to 12 FPS.
The A19 Pro processor is known to offer up to 69% performance increase compared to the previous generation A18 Pro and A17 Pro models. The vapor chamber cooling system in the device also aims to support gaming performance.
However, these technical improvements were not enough to handle the load brought about by the emulation. The excessive overheating of the iPhone 17 Pro Max during testing clearly showed that the hardware was being pushed to its limits.
Emulator updates expected
It is thought that the performance drop experienced is more related to the current optimization level of the XeniOS emulator than to the shortcomings of the A19 Pro processor. More frequent updates to the emulator may ensure smoother results in the future.
Even the extra cooling formulas applied to the device are not expected to create a significant improvement in frame rate. This shows that emulation technology is not yet fully mature on the iOS platform.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, which will be released in the future, promise higher performance with the A20 Pro processor. Improvements to Xbox 360 emulators in the future may make the gaming experience on portable devices more stable.
Do you think that these kinds of emulation experiments on portable devices could become a standard gaming experience in the future as hardware power increases?
