With the release of The Odyssey film, the number of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey players increased significantly worldwide.
New releases often create a buzz in the gaming world. However, Ubisoft’s 2018 action-role-playing game Assassin’s Creed Odyssey experienced an unexpected increase in players thanks to the release of The Odyssey movie.
According to Alinea Analytics data, the game’s player count increased by 90% in total across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. In the 10 days following the movie’s release on July 17th, the daily player count rose from 122,000 to 233,000.
Platform-Based Growth and the Impact of Subscriptions
When the data is examined on a system basis, it is seen that there was a 134% growth on the Xbox side, and the daily player count increased from 36,000 to 84,000. A 94% increase was recorded on the PlayStation platform, and a 26% increase on Steam.
The inclusion of the game in subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass and Ubisoft+ played a significant role in this rapid rise, especially on the console side. After noticing the box office success of the movie, Ubisoft made posts on its social media accounts that created direct links between the game and the movie.
Thematic Connections Between Game and Film
Ubisoft’s placement of the movie’s logo on in-game screenshots in its posts was effective in attracting players’ attention. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey actually contained many references, artwork, and character names to the Greek epic.
While the film focuses directly on a mythological narrative, the game blends these elements with its own science fiction framework. Although there is no direct connection between the two productions, the atmosphere created by the film led players back to the ancient Greek world.
The game’s extensive content provides a long-term alternative for viewers waiting for the movie to come to digital platforms. For users who delve into the game’s depths, this adventure offers an experience that can continue until a physical copy of the movie is released. Do you think we will see this kind of influence of well-known films on the gaming world more often in the future?
