Sony’s new patent application reveals a crazy DualSense design with a touch screen and modular structure. Details are in our news.
Japanese technology giant Sony has applied a patent for a new DualSense design that could radically change the PlayStation 5 experience. The resulting official documents show that the company plans to replace the current controller’s touchpad with a removable and modular touchscreen.
This innovative project, which is still in the development phase, aims to offer players quick access to in-game menus, notification tracking and advanced control options. Sony had previously patented many different concepts such as gel-based tactile feedback and flexible body structure; But this new design seems to push the limits of modularization in the controller world.
This new technology, patented by Sony, aims to turn game controllers into smart devices.
Modular Display Offers New Control Experience
According to the patent details, this small touch screen, which will be at the center of the controller, has the functionality of a smartphone. Players will be able to access console settings, read messages and view notifications without interrupting gameplay.
In addition, the fact that the device is physically printable will allow players to take their interactions in the game to a more individual level.
One of the most striking features of the system is that the screen and the rotary control key have a magnetic structure. Thanks to this feature, players will be able to physically configure the control system according to their preferences. While the rotary key enables quick switching between menus, the ability to position the screen at different points makes ergonomic customization possible.
Incoming Calls Affect Gaming Experience
Another important detail that stands out in Sony’s patent is about smartphone integration. Users will be able to respond to invitations received on their phones directly from the controller. However, this situation has a structure that will interrupt the flow of the game. If a player chooses to answer the call, the game will automatically go to the pause screen, allowing the player to switch focus to the phone call.
It is not yet clear whether technological innovations will turn into definitive works.
Future Projects Still Remain in the Development Stage
Although no official announcement has been made yet, this patent proves how bold Sony is working on ideas on the hardware side. It is stated that the design in question will be fully compatible with the professionally focused DualSense Edge or Access Controller designed for disabled players, which are currently on the market. However, it should be reminding that not every patent turns into a commercial work, and Sony can keep these ideas only as R&D work.
