Samsung Develops New Glass Technology to Reduce Marks on Foldable Screens

Samsung Develops New Glass Technology to Reduce Marks on Foldable Screens

Samsung is switching to a new ultra-thin glass technology with a thickness of 60 micrometers to reduce screen marks on its 2026 model foldable phones.

South Korean technology giant Samsung is preparing to make a revolutionary change in its foldable smartphone series within the scope of its 2026 product strategy. The company decided to use a much thicker ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology than current models in order to minimize the screen fold mark, which is one of the biggest complaints of users.

According to the information received, a new Fold model, expected to be released in 2026, will be equipped with a screen protector with a thickness of approximately 60 micrometers. This breakthrough aims to both increase the durability of the device and significantly reduce the visible break line on the screen.

  • Samsung plans to use 60 micrometer thick ultra-thin glass in its 2026 model foldable devices.
  • The newly developed glass technology offers 30 percent higher durability compared to existing 45 micrometer standard glasses.
  • The company aims to introduce a total of three different devices in 2026: Galaxy Z Flip8, Galaxy Z Fold8 and a new wide-screen model.

Durability Comes to the Fore in Screen Technology

Samsung has been experiencing a strategic transformation in recent years in the development process of foldable screen phones. In the past, the company chose to thin the shielding glass down to 30 micrometers to maximize the flexibility of the screen.

However, tests and user feedback revealed that very thin glasses are more vulnerable to impacts and over time, more visible marks form at the folding area. For this reason, Samsung is adopting a new engineering approach that focuses on improving structural integrity and visual quality rather than flexibility.

Market Share Expands with Three Different Models

The year 2026 will be one of the periods when the foldable phone range is most comprehensive for Samsung. The new device, which the company plans to include in its product range, draws attention with its 7.6-inch screen size.

Unlike the current Fold series, it is said that this model will have a wider body design and its vertical length will be shortened, increasing ergonomics. It is claimed that this design change, combined with the hardness offered by 60 micrometer thick glass, will give the device a much more premium and solid feeling.

The use of thicker glass may make the chronic problem of screen marks on foldable phones a thing of the past.

Design Approach Reshaping

Samsung engineers continue to make improvements to the folding system of the screen to optimize the large format structure of the device. This new device, which will be offered together with the 8.0-inch Galaxy Z Fold8 and 6.9-inch Galaxy Z Flip8, aims to address different user needs.

Developed especially for those looking for a larger screen experience, this model raises the bar in terms of flatness of the screen. This breakthrough by Samsung proves that foldable phones are no longer just a prototype, but long-lasting mainstream devices.

Do you think thicker and stronger screen glasses are enough to extend the lifespan of foldable phones, or should we see fundamental changes in hinge technology? Don’t forget to share your expensive comments with us.
