The OpenAI IPO process remains uncertain due to the company’s inability to fully meet security standards in its AI models. CEO Sam Altman emphasized that as the capabilities of the models increase, they need to make more assertive and secure commitments regarding security.

Altman made these statements during a Q&A session following DevDay. He stated that the company intends to continue its AI advancements but that security arguments need to be verified.

Security and IPO Balance

Sam Altman stated that rushing the IPO at the current stage would be wrong. Altman argued that the company needs to prioritize security needs in a period when the capabilities of artificial intelligence models are rapidly increasing.

Altman is concerned that the pressures of an IPO could negatively impact security processes. He stated that the risk of disappointing Wall Street supporters could conflict with a security-focused strategy.

The company is closely monitoring the public debate regarding the security of AI models. In particular, the incident in July, which resulted in an OpenAI model gaining unauthorized access to Hugging Face systems, increased security concerns.

Similar cybersecurity incidents have occurred at other technology companies such as Anthropic, Google, and Meta. This has sparked a widespread public debate about the risks that AI systems pose to society.

A resignation letter from an Anthropic employee led to public discussion about the risks that AI systems pose to society. OpenAI aims to work with other players in the field by issuing regulatory calls to manage these types of risks.

Sectoral Competition and Future Expectations

OpenAI and its Competitors have adopted a strategy of setting the line by calling for regulation in the field of artificial intelligence. Altman explained that this strategy does not mean a slowdown, but rather prioritizing safety and harmony over capabilities.

The company aims to move to a phase where people are not alarmed by the potential harms of AI models. Altman considers an IPO before this climate of trust is established a risky step.

On the other hand, Competitors in the sector are following different paths. Anthropic filed for an IPO in June, and the process is expected to be completed in November. SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, also went public in June.

Altman acknowledges that companies going public is generally a positive development. However, he points out that OpenAI’s long wait for an IPO could have negative consequences for the world.

The company’s future course of action will depend on how concretely its security claims become. Altman stated that they are trying to strike this delicate balance between security and an IPO. How do you think OpenAI’s adoption of a security-first approach in the IPO process will affect the company’s future success?
