Qualcomm is developing official GPU drivers to support PC gaming for Snapdragon 8 Select processors. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 have been tested.
Qualcomm is working on official GPU drivers with the goal of making Windows-based PC games run more smoothly on Snapdragon-based smartphones. Despite the high performance capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processors introduced at the 2026 Snapdragon Summit, current portable devices still encounter technical difficulties in running DirectX 12-based games.
New reports shared by Geekerwan reveal that the company has initiated an active work process on official driver support and direct DirectX 12 optimizations to more efficiently integrate PC games into the Android ecosystem.
New Processors Offer High Performance
Qualcomm is setting a new standard in the mobile world with the Snapdragon 8 Elite series. Prime cores capable of reaching speeds of 5GHz and the advanced Oryon CPU architecture bring portable devices closer to a PC-like gaming experience. In particular, the Adreno Matrix cores found in the Extreme version push the limits of the hardware by undertaking critical tasks such as AI-assisted scene processing and frame rendering.
This technological advancement can actually be observed in existing games such as Diablo Immortal or War Thunder Mobile. However, the main goal for gamers is to be able to experience popular PC games developed specifically for the Windows platform directly on Android phones.
Translation Layers are Used for PC Games
Currently, Android users try to run Windows games using third-party tools like Winlator or GameHub and community-developed Turnip drivers. Although these methods work through Wine-based translation layers, performance is often unstable and significant compatibility problems occur. The lack of DirectX 12 support is considered the biggest obstacle to modern games running smoothly on Android.
Tests conducted by the Geekerwan team on Qualcomm reference devices show what might be possible when official driver support arrives. The fact that demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong, running in DirectX 12 mode, can reach playable frame rates of around 30 FPS without any custom optimization is considered a great success.
Native Support Expected in the Future
Qualcomm management is currently remaining silent on these developments that have generated great excitement in the technology world. While no direct announcement of DirectX 12 support was made during the summit sessions, it is clear that the company is accelerating its engineering-level testing. If Qualcomm releases official drivers, the Android ecosystem could become a much stronger alternative to handheld gaming consoles.
