While Sony focuses on PS5 and PC in live service games, it is giving signals for the new generation portable PlayStation technologies.
Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Hideaki Nishino clarified PlayStation’s strategy for live service games. While the company focuses on the console experience in single-player first-party games, it continues to base its use on PS5 and PC platforms on the live service side.
Nishino’s emphasis on technologies that can be used in different forms and in different places brought the expectations of the new generation portable PlayStation back to the agenda. These statements reveal Sony’s determination to expand the gaming ecosystem.
PlayStation’s live service and PC strategy
PlayStation is confident in the potential of live service games to attract users on a global scale. The company continues to defend its presence in this field with both first-party and third-party content.
Nishino states that the live service approach is not limited to new games only, but existing games are also supported by campaigns within the ecosystem. For example, in-game currency discounts for PS5 users for Genshin Impact stand out as a part of this strategy.
Prepared in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Arc System Works, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is among the company’s important live service projects this year. On the PC side, platform selection is determined entirely by the structure of the game and its potential to reach large audiences.
In single-player and story-oriented first-party games, Sony keeps the experience offered by the PlayStation console at the center. This distinction shows that the company follows different platform strategies depending on the game type.
Despite the difficulties experienced with projects such as Concord and Marathon, Sony does not give up on the live service category. The company continues to make new experiments in this field and develop medium to long-term plans for existing games.
New generation expectations on the hardware side
Nishino emphasizes that the idea that special gaming hardware is needed to play games has not changed. Sony aims to preserve the special identity of the PlayStation brand by continuing to produce its own gaming hardware.
The company, which wants to adapt to people’s changing lifestyles, focuses on technologies that can be used in different forms and in different places. PlayStation Portal stands out as a current example of this search for flexible gaming experiences.
Following the launch of the cloud streaming feature in November 2025, there was a 1.5-fold increase in the number of users in January 2026 compared to the previous month. This proves players’ interest in gaming experiences that are not dependent on television.
Sony is also additional planning products such as monitors and speakers to strengthen the gaming experience outside the living room. Although there is no official announcement for a new generation portable console, Nishino’s statements keep the expectations in this direction alive.
While PlayStation follows a live service and PC-oriented path in software, it combines the classic console line with flexible usage scenarios in hardware.
