Leaked PlayStation 6 specifications offer valuable clues about the graphics performance of the new generation console. Current calculations show that the device’s graphics processor can reach 80 TFLOPS thanks to Dual Issue support.

Expected to come with a custom graphics processor based on AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture, the console utilizes TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process. On the GPU side, technical details such as 54 process units, clock speeds up to 3.6 GHz, and a 160W power limit stand out.

Technical Details and Performance Comparison

Based on the leaked information, it is claimed that the classic raster performance of the PlayStation 6 GPU will be between 34 and 40 TFLOPS. This value points to a performance class comparable to desktop graphics cards like the Radeon RX 9070 XT.

The RX 9070 XT comes with 64 compute units and a 256-bit memory bus, while the PlayStation 6 has 54 compute units and a 160-bit bus. However, the console’s clock speed, which can reach up to 3.6 GHz, and improvements in the RDNA 5 architecture provide 15 to 20 percent higher performance per compute unit.

When AI-based image processing formulas are disabled, the RX 9070 XT can remain 5 to 10 percent faster than the PlayStation 6 in pure raster loads. The desktop card’s wider memory bus provides an advantage in these types of continuous loads.

Dual Issue Support and RTX 5080 Comparison

The main difference lies in the Dual Issue support in the RDNA 5 architecture. This technology allows for the parallel execution of a number of instructions, theoretically doubling the FP32 computing capacity.

Thanks to this, the nominal value of 40 TFLOPS can increase to 68 to 80 TFLOPS depending on the workload. This theoretical value of 80 TFLOPS exceeds the 56.3 TFLOPS calculated for the GeForce RTX 5080.

However, it should be noted that these numbers do not directly represent game performance. The architecture, memory system, and game engine optimization are among the key elements that determine the actual experience.

It is predicted that the PlayStation 6 GPU can deliver 70 to 100 percent higher performance than the RX 9070 XT in games using full path tracing. This difference is said to be supported by ray tracing hardware and next-generation scene upscaling techniques.

The next-generation PSSR 3 scene upscaling technology can increase output speed by 35 to 50 percent compared to nominal graphics performance. It is worth remembering that all this information has not yet been officially confirmed by Sony and is based solely on theoretical comparisons. Do you think the PlayStation 6, with these technical specifications, can be a significant competitor to PC gaming?
