Paramount and Warner Bros. The controversial merger process, planned to take place between, was stopped indefinitely by a decision taken by a federal court. This restriction decision, which will last for 14 days, has a structure that can be extended further if the parties agree.

The decision in question was taken within the scope of a lawsuit filed by 12 states to prevent the merger. Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín deemed this time appropriate to consider the arguments presented by the states.

Antitrust case affects the process

The coalition of states that filed the lawsuit arguing that the massive $111 billion merger violates federal antitrust laws. State officials say this merger would reduce competition in the market and could lead to price increases for consumers.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the rulings a critical first victory in their lawsuit to block the merger from happening. In its defense in court, Paramount stated that this restriction decision was not necessary, but has not yet made an official statement regarding the current developments.

Judge Martínez-Olguín scheduled a hearing for the preliminary injunction on August 3. If the court approves this injunction, the merger process could be permanently blocked.

If the court rejects the request for interim measures, the agreement process is expected to be accelerated. According to information shared by Variety, if the agreement is not completed by September 30, Paramount will contact Warner Bros. will have to pay millions of dollars daily to its investors.
