OpenAI has announced the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program, specifically designed for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. This new initiative will provide 100,000 researchers with free access to the company’s AI models.

The program will launch this summer with 10,000 participants and will gradually expand to 100,000 by 2027. Researchers from leading academic institutions will receive direct support from OpenAI and will be able to use the company’s latest GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model.

Significant Investment in Academic Research

OpenAI states that this program is part of a $250 million commitment to support external scientific research and discovery by 2027. Participating researchers will also have the right to include four collaborators from their own institutions in the program.

The company specifically emphasizes that researchers’ data will not be used by default to train models. This step reflects a similar strategic approach to previous initiatives targeting educational institutions, such as ChatGPT Edu.

The Era of AI in Research Processes

Researchers are already using AI models in processes such as data analysis and grant applications. With this program, OpenAI aims to formalize this interest.

In January, the company also launched Prism, a tool designed to work with scientific journals and documents. Accessible to anyone with a ChatGPT account, Prism provides support for verifying and formatting research citations.
