OpenAI Goes Back on Its Promise: Cyber Restricted

OpenAI Goes Back on Its Promise: Cyber Restricted

OpenAI announced that it is restricting access to its cybersecurity tool Cyber. Despite Sam Altman’s previous criticisms, a similar path is being followed.

OpenAI announced that it has introduced access restrictions for Cyber, its new tool developed in the field of cyber security. The company announced that it will only offer this tool to critical cyber defenders who meet certain criteria.

Sam Altman had previously criticized Anthropic for offering its Mythos tool to a limited user base. However, OpenAI decided to implement a similar strategy for its own cybersecurity tool, Cyber.

Access and Use Restrictions

OpenAI will begin deploying the GPT-5.5 Cyber model to critical cyber defenders in the next few days. The company requires users who want to access this tool to fill out an application form on the website containing their identity information and purposes of use.

Cyber can perform complex operations such as penetration testing, vulnerability detection and malware reverse engineering. This tool is designed to help companies find vulnerabilities in their systems and test their defense mechanisms.

Concern that the tool could be exploited by malicious individuals underlies this restrictive approach of OpenAI. Previously, Anthropic had limited the Mythos vehicle for similar reasons.

Criticisms and Future Plans

When Sam Altman first announced Anthropic’s restrictions on Mythos, he described it as fear-based marketing. Some critics also argued that Anthropic’s statements on this subject were exaggerated.

Ironically, there were reports that an unauthorized group had managed to gain access to Anthropic’s Mythos tool. OpenAI, on the other hand, prioritizes security measures to prevent a similar situation from occurring.

OpenAI continues its work to bring the Cyber tool to wider audiences. The company states that it is consulting with the US government during this process and is trying to identify more users with legitimate cybersecurity identities. What impact do you think these restrictions will have on the cybersecurity world?
