The official support list includes Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. The company emphasizes that these selected distributions form the basis for many different sub-releases, thus ensuring a wide range of compatibility.

A large portion of the hundreds of different distributions in the Linux community are expected to support the application thanks to these foundational structures. This allows developers and Linux users to move directly to a desktop experience, freeing them from browser dependency.

Competition and Market Situation

OpenAI’s move is a response to its competitor Anthropic’s Claude desktop application, released for Linux about a month ago. Anthropic had made its application available for Ubuntu 22.04 and later, and Debian 12 and later.

OpenAI aims to strengthen its presence in the desktop ecosystem with this new release. This official support offered to Linux users is considered a positive development in the open-source world.
