New Security Measures Against Thieves with Android 17

New Security Measures Against Thieves with Android 17

Google strengthens theft protection with Android 17. Device security increases with biometric verification and new lock features.

With the Android 17 operating system, Google significantly increases the security level of smartphones against theft. The company takes device security to the next level by strengthening the “Mark as lost” feature on Find Hub with biometric verification.

This new update aims to prevent even people who have obtained the device’s PIN code from tracking the phone or accessing data. Users can now create an extra layer of protection by locking their devices with their biometric data.

Advanced theft protection

When the “Mark as lost” feature is activated, the phone not only locks but also hides the Quick Settings menu. Additionally, the device restricts thieves’ interaction with the device by disabling new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.

Google is making features such as Remote Locking and Theft Detection Lock on by default on all new devices with Android 17. These features are automatically activated when the device is reset or upgraded to Android 17.

Following successful pilot tests in Brazil, these protection mechanisms are being rolled out worldwide. The company also makes these features available in markets such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the UK for devices using Android 10 and above.

New restrictions for data security

Android 17 significantly reduces the number of PIN or password attempts to make it harder for thieves to access data on the device. By extending the waiting time between incorrectly entered password attempts, password cracking attempts are prevented with quick attempts.

The lock screen has been redesigned to display more limited information after incorrect login attempts. These changes make it more effective to protect the data on the device in case it is stolen.

Google shared these security improvements in detail within the scope of The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 event. Users will be able to benefit from these new security layers when the Android 17 update begins to be distributed.
