New Era on Xbox: Are Classic Games Coming Back?

New Era on Xbox: Are Classic Games Coming Back?

Xbox’s new Strategy Manager, Matthew Ball, plans to bring back Microsoft’s classic game series and rebuild the console market.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that he has added two important names to strengthen the management team. While former OpenAI manager Scott Van Vliet became the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Matthew Ball, one of the well-known analysts in the industry, started his career as Strategy Manager.

In his statements shared with Bloomberg, Matthew Ball stated that Microsoft plans to revive game series that have attracted great attention in the past. Ball emphasizes that he believes that the console market maintains its growth potential and that new strategies will have positive effects on revenue and profitability.

Are Legendary Game Series Returning?

Ball’s statements raised expectations for Xbox games, which remained silent for a long time. Productions that have not had new games for years, such as Banjo-Kazooie, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Crimson Skies, MechAssault, Viva Piñata, Kameo and Shadowrun, are among the series that players are waiting for to return.

This breakthrough is thought to be an important step in increasing loyalty to the brand and meeting the expectations of the player community.

Matthew Ball, known for his experience in the industry, points out that the market exhibits an unstable growth in his reports analyzing the new situation of the gaming world.

According to Ball, although global content spending has reached record levels, this situation does not reflect equally on all publishers. We are going through a period in which platform services and subscription models, in particular, are taking precedence over classic game sales.

Market Analysis and Future Strategies

Ball’s February 2026 report shows that a small number of major productions in the gaming world play a dominant role in total playing time and spending. Microsoft’s evaluation of its major game portfolio may increase the company’s chances of finding a place among these big hit games.

In this new era, where the Game Pass subscription system is at the center, the return of the old series is of strategic importance.

As an interesting detail, it is known that Matthew Ball consulted Microsoft on the Game Pass subscription model in 2020. Ball, who provided a comprehensive report on the advantages and disadvantages of the subscription system at that time, is now directly part of the strategy team, which may change Microsoft’s approach to the gaming world.

Considering the changes the company has made in Game Pass pricing and strategies recently, it is a matter of curiosity how this new era will take shape.

Do you think Xbox’s revival of these classic series will be enough to strengthen the brand’s position in the console market?
