WhatsApp has started testing a new chat theme feature in the Android beta version of its popular messaging app to enrich the user experience. This update, available with WhatsApp beta version 2.26.37.6, brings five different theme categories for personalizing conversation screens, as well as customizable wallpaper options.

Developed by Meta, this new structure brings the personalization options already available on the iOS platform to Android users. To maintain the readability of chats, the system automatically assigns bubble colors to match the selected theme, eliminating the need for users to manually adjust them.

Themes are Presented in Different Categories

WhatsApp has categorized themes into groups so users can easily find what they are looking for. The “Featured” category brings together the most popular designs, while the “Nature” category offers peaceful visuals such as forest, desert, and mountain views.

Additionally, the “Minimal” option caters to those seeking a simpler interface, while the “Doodle” category brings back WhatsApp’s iconic patterned wallpaper. Users can easily switch between these themes to keep their chat screens up-to-date.

Live Wallpapers Change the Experience

One of the most striking aspects of the new update is the animated wallpapers in the “Live” category. These backgrounds move with a slow animation that won’t disrupt the chat flow.

These animations, which add visual depth without distracting users, can be distinguished by a small marker. WhatsApp takes care to keep the speed of these animations at a level that will not negatively affect battery consumption and readability.

Wallpapers Organized in a Separate Section

WhatsApp has also grouped wallpapers under special categories in addition to themes. It’s now possible to change only the wallpaper instead of applying an entire theme.

Categories like “Vibrant,” “Gradient,” and “Lively” offer users a wide range of options. Gradient transitions provide a contemporary look, while vibrant options feature bold and energetic color palettes.

Automatic Color Assignment Ensures Readability

WhatsApp automatically assigns the color of message bubbles for each theme and wallpaper combination. Thanks to this smart feature, text is always easily readable, no matter how complex the chosen background is. Users can use the colors assigned by the system automatically, or they can manually adjust them according to their preferences.

Wide Rollout Continues

This feature, currently only available to a select number of beta testers, will be rolled out to a wider audience in the coming weeks. If you are using the beta version, you can check if you can access these new personalization tools by updating your app via the Google Play Store.

WhatsApp has not yet shared an official date for when this feature will be generally available.
