Microsoft is preparing to develop a Windows 11 age verification API that will allow Windows 11 users to share their age groups with applications. This new infrastructure aims to centralize digital security processes by enabling applications to obtain information about users’ age group.

Instead of sharing the user’s full date of birth or exact age, the system categorizes the information according to reasonable age ranges. Applications will be able to see one of the defined groups: under 10 years old, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, and 18 years and older.

How Will the Age Verification Process Work?

The developed Windows Age APIs will also be able to communicate to applications whether the user’s age has been independently verified. This procedure aims to reduce applications’ reliance on existing procedures such as credit card information or third-party authentication services.

Microsoft aims to create a more secure standard, especially for applications offering adult content, by centralizing this process. To protect user privacy, not every application will have direct access to this age information.

Access Control and Release Date

Microsoft’s Digital Safety platform will control which applications can use this API and will only allow access to approved applications. In this way, it is planned to prevent the misuse of the age verification process and provide a more controlled digital environment.

Currently documented in the Windows SDK, the Windows Age APIs are not yet actively used on Windows 11. Microsoft is expected to release this feature by the end of 2026. Do you think this new age verification system will be sufficient for digital security?
