Another important milestone has been reached in Turkey’s localization efforts in rail system technologies. The National Electric High-Speed ​​​​Train , developed by TÜRASAŞ, has surpassed its previous speed of 240 km/h in ongoing tests, reaching 250 km/h.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the dynamic safety tests of the train have been started on the Gebze-Eskişehir route and that the work is continuing between Eskişehir-Polatlı. In the tests, the train’s performance at different speeds and operating conditions is being evaluated.

Target operating speed of 225 km/h

The operating speed of the national high-speed train has been set at 225 km/h. The test program aims to verify the driving safety, braking, track alignment, and overall performance criteria by increasing the train’s speeds.

In tests conducted in May, the train reached a speed of 240 km/h. The 250 km/h achieved in the latest test is the new highest speed reached in the train’s design and safety verification process.

The National Electric High-Speed ​​​​Train Set, which will carry 577 passengers in 8 carriages, consists of 8 cars and has a capacity of 577 passengers. Designed with an aluminum body, the train is equipped with features for passenger comfort as well as safety and accessibility.

The train features various technologies such as:

Automatic train stopping system,

Electromechanical passenger entrance doors,

Fully automatic climate control,

Fire alarm system,

Visual and auditory passenger information systems,

Camera systems.

There are also two special passenger compartments for disabled passengers and elevators that allow wheelchairs to be transported between the platform and the train.

One of the striking aspects of the project is that some of the most critical technologies of the train were developed in Turkey.

The Train Control and Management System (TCMS)

and the Traction System were designed and produced entirely with domestic and national resources in collaboration with ASELSAN. Thus, the aim is to reduce dependence on foreign sources in critical technologies in the train’s motion control and traction infrastructure.

These systems undertake fundamental tasks ranging from the reliable operation of the train to the control of the engines and the management of the traction power.

Production of 225 km/h train sets continues The national high-speed train project aims not only at prototype development but also at mass production.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure had previously announced that

14 National Electric High-Speed ​​​​Train Sets with an operating speed of 225 km/h are planned to be produced between 2026-2028. With the work carried out at TÜRASAŞ’s Sakarya facilities, the aim is to increase Turkey’s domestic production capacity in high-speed train sets.

Developed on the experience Turkey previously gained with the National Electric Train Set in the 160 km/h class, the high-speed train project takes the country’s capacity to develop higher-speed rail system vehicles to a higher level.

Tests will continue

The testing process of the train is not complete with the breaking of the 250 km/h speed record. Uraloğlu stated that the tests will continue in accordance with the determined program under different speeds and operating conditions.

In order for the train to be put into operation reliably, comfortably and with high performance, various verification studies including speed, braking, driving safety and track harmony need to be completed.

The fact that the national high-speed train reached a speed of 250 km/h stands out as a valuable step in Turkey’s ability not only to produce rail system vehicles but also to develop the critical control and traction technologies used in these vehicles.
