Amazon is working on the Moonraker project, which turns Alexa into an advanced artificial intelligence spy that can perform multi-step tasks with a single command.
Amazon is working on a new project, codenamed ‘Moonraker’, to turn its voice assistant Alexa into a much more advanced and independent artificial intelligence tool.
According to leaked internal documents, this new update aims to enable Alexa to perform complex simultaneous and multi-step tasks with a single command.
For example, the user will be able to call a taxi and send a message to his friend at the same time. With this breakthrough, the company plans to compete directly with artificial intelligence spies developed by giants such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
However, the huge hardware costs predicted for 2026 bring about some discussions within the company.
What Does Moonraker Project Bring to Alexa?
Amazon’s current assistant, Alexa, can essentially control a variety of smart home devices, set timers, and answer easy questions.
However, the rapid shift of the technology world to agentic AI systems forces Amazon to take a big step in this field. According to documents planning revealed by Business Insider, Moonraker allows Alexa to coordinate multiple services simultaneously.
The assistant who used to only take commands now becomes a “super agent” who can make plans and take initiative on your behalf.
In the leaked documents, it is emphasized that the main aim of the Moonraker project is to make Alexa a structure that is not only responsive but also takes direct action.
Advanced Tests with Anthropic Sonnet
Leaked reports indicate that Amazon used hundreds of NVIDIA graphics cards to test these new capabilities, leveraging Anthropic’s Sonnet model for improved logic execution and visual rendering.
The Alexa+ version, which will be widely available across the USA in early 2026, can already work integrated with services such as Uber and Ticketmaster. However, Moonraker promises to offer a much more fluid and uninterrupted experience by automatically planning the user’s wishes in the background.
$100 Million Bill and Internal Concerns
The price of this huge technological leap seems quite heavy. According to internal company correspondence, Moonraker is described as the highest cost initiative of the Alexa + ecosystem. It is claimed that GPU costs in 2026 alone will exceed 100 million dollars.
This situation causes budget concerns among Amazon’s top executives. Some reports even discuss options such as postponing the release date of the project or narrowing its scope in order to alleviate increasing costs. This financial burden of training and operating artificial intelligence models challenges not only Amazon but the entire technology world.
Problems on the Alexa+ Front
Despite the Moonraker leaks, Amazon continues to steadily expand the features of its Alexa+ assistant. As you may remember, the company has introduced three new personality styles in recent months that determine how the assistant will interact with users.
Among these options, there is even a special mode in which the assistant gives more sharp-tongued and entertaining responses. In addition, natural language food ordering features through applications such as GrubHub and Uber Eats are also recently integrated into the system.
Despite all these exciting innovations, the release of the Alexa+ version does not go completely smoothly. Some beta users in the early access period report that the assistant glitches or hallucinates even in easy tasks that it performed easily in previous versions.
One tester even states that the assistant accidentally turned off the aquarium filter. Nevertheless, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in his latest shareholder letter, signals that they stand firmly behind the project by stating that users talk twice as much and place three times more orders with the new generation assistant compared to the past.
