Microsoft has officially decided to end support for the Manifest V2 extension platform in its Edge browser. This move will prevent well-known ad-blocking tools like uBlock Origin from working on the browser.

Following Google Chrome’s earlier similar move, Microsoft is also moving its ecosystem to the new MV3 platform. The company states that there are only 58 MV2-based extensions with significant usage rates on the Edge Add-On Store.

Transition Process and Changes Awaiting Users

Microsoft announced that it will begin gradually disabling all remaining MV2 extensions this month. Users will be informed beforehand and, where appropriate, directed to MV3-based alternatives.

These changes will first be implemented in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels. Subsequently, these updates will be reflected in stable versions in the coming months, with the goal of completing the process by the end of the year.

Switching to alternatives compatible with the new platform, such as uBlock Origin Lite , is offered as an option for users to maintain their ad-blocking requirements. Alternatively, browsers like Opera, which have stated that they will continue MV2 support as long as it is technically feasible, or other options like Firefox, can also be considered.

The timeline is different for corporate users

While the transition process for consumers will be completed by the end of 2026, corporate devices will not be affected at this stage. The complete removal of MV2 support for managed devices will take place in early 2027.
