Microsoft is making a significant change to its Copilot Plus PC brand, which has been in the spotlight of the technology world for some time. The company is choosing not to use this special name, which it created for AI-powered computers, on its new devices. After two and a half years, Microsoft and Qualcomm seem to have accepted that this brand has reached the end of its lifespan. Although it meets the hardware needs of new generation computers, Microsoft no longer calls these devices Copilot Plus PCs.

Change in Brand Strategy

According to Windows Central, the new 12-inch Microsoft Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop models technically meet all the necessary system requirements. However, Microsoft Surface CVP Brett Ostrom explicitly stated that these devices are no longer called Copilot Plus PCs.

Qualcomm’s senior vice president, Kedar Kondap, agrees with this view. Kondap states that computers offering similar experiences will no longer use this branding.

It’s not surprising that Microsoft and its partners are moving away from this brand. In 2024, many experts predicted that almost every computer would soon have the basic AI hardware levels represented by this brand.

The Recall tool, the most notable feature of Copilot Plus PC devices, was not well received by users. Furthermore, Microsoft has been the target of criticism due to its AI sales pitches, which have always annoyed Windows users, and the now assignable dedicated Copilot keyboard key.

The New Era and Nvidia Collaboration

Microsoft’s flagship hardware is now focused on Nvidia chips. These chips are expected to usher in a new era in the use of personal AI on Windows.

The company will hold an event on October 7th on how local AI will shape the future of computing. At this event, a new naming strategy is expected to be announced, replacing the Copilot Plus PC brand.

How do you evaluate this sudden change in Microsoft’s AI strategy and the abandonment of the brand?
