Messages That Disappear After Reading Are Coming to WhatsApp

WhatsApp is testing the “After Read” disappearing messages feature with the Android beta update. New especially notifications can be deleted as soon as they are read.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will maximize user privacy. WhatsApp beta 2.26.19.11 update for Android, offered within the scope of the Google Play Beta Program, adds a completely new dimension to the periodic messages feature that is already in our lives. The platform is testing a new timer based on the moment when messages are read by the other party, replacing the purity system in the current system, which is strictly based on end of day.

Thanks to this new infrastructure, users can ensure that the critical or sensitive information they send is permanently deleted only after it is seen by the intended person. This maximizes information security, especially in instant sharing, and prevents the storage space of the devices from being filled unnecessarily.

  • New Period Focused on Reading:Instead of the 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days in the current system, which starts from the moment of submission, the “After reading” option is now added, which is based directly on the moment the notification is read.

  • Flexible Timer Options:After opening and reading the other party’s notification, users can flexibly determine how long the content will remain on the air with alternative periods such as 5 minutes, 1 hour or 12 hours.

  • Preventing Message Loss:In the old system, which started a grace period from the moment of sending, there was a risk that the message would be deleted without being seen when the recipient went offline; With the new system, the message remains in trust until opened by the recipient.

How Does the Advanced Posted Messages Feature Work?

WhatsApp developers solve the biggest user scenario problem experienced in the current notification system with this update.

As it is known, in the current system, when a 1-hour disappearing period was selected for a notification and the other party could not access the internet at that time, situations occurred such as the notification being deleted without being able to read it. The newly developed “After Reading” timer completely reverses this algorithm.

In the new system, the sent message remains fully visible and accessible until the recipient opens the chat window. The countdown process begins not at the moment of sending, but when the recipient opens the chat and creates a blue click, that is, reads the message.

For example, if a 5-minute timer is selected, the 5-minute destruction process becomes active as soon as the recipient opens the message on Tuesday, even if the message was sent on Sunday, and at the end of the period, the data is completely scraped from both devices.

What’s Happening on the Sender Device?

Another striking element in the technical details of the new feature is the security measure on the sender side. While the notification is preserved on the recipient’s device until he or she opens the chat, the destruction time selected on the sender’s own device (for example, 5 minutes) starts to count from the moment of sending.

When the time expires, the notification disappears from the sender’s screen, but the recipient continues to wait confidently on the other side until he opens the chat and reads it.

Who is the New Feature Accessible to?

This innovation, which is currently being tested on the Android platform, is offered to a limited number of beta users. When the development phase is completed and the necessary server optimizations are made, the feature is planned to be gradually distributed to all Android and iOS users with a general update.

This privacy-focused breakthrough aims to make the platform a much safer haven for users who share instant passwords, address-based information or have sensitive personal conversations, especially in the business world.
