Apple’s new high-end laptop, the MacBook Ultra, is attracting attention with its touchscreen and OLED panel technologies. However, it is said that the new design is expected to be introduced with this device will not be exclusive to this model and will soon spread to other models.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to renew its entire Mac product range within the next two years. Within these plans, it is stated that the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, expected to be released in 2027, will adopt the new design language introduced with the MacBook Ultra.

Design and Hardware Changes

In the 2021 MacBook Pro design, Apple made the device thicker and heavier, while bringing back the HDMI port, SD card slot, and MagSafe charging support. In the new generation of models, however, the company seems to be reversing this process, aiming to make the devices thinner and lighter.

The use of hybrid OLED panels eliminates the backlight layer of the screen, allowing for a thinner chassis. It is claimed that Apple will not abandon existing ports to achieve this thinness and will take user expectations into account.

On the front of the device, the screen notch is expected to be replaced by a smaller camera hole. This pill-shaped cutout will allow the Dynamic Island feature, which we see in iPhone models and which can expand depending on the mount, to be brought to the Mac world.

Screen Sizes and Future Plans

Whether there will be a change in screen sizes is not yet clear. While some reports suggest that 14.3 and 16.3-inch panels supplied by Samsung Display will be used, other sources state that the current screen sizes will be maintained but the bezels will be thinned.

It is said that Apple is designing the touchscreen experience in a way that supports existing usage, rather than focusing on it as its primary focus. Additionally, it is reported that they are working on a reinforced hinge structure to prevent wobbling when the screen is touched.

With the release of the MacBook Ultra, it remains a question how Apple’s naming strategy for its high-end laptop series will evolve. With the arrival of new models featuring M7 Pro and M7 Max chips towards the end of 2027, all powerful MacBook models are expected to share this new design language.
