Japanese Financial Sector Will Be Protected by GPT-5.5

Japanese Financial Sector Will Be Protected by GPT-5.5

Japan announced that it will start using OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 model to protect its finance department from cyber attacks.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence’s coding and technical analysis capabilities opens the door to a new era in the field of cyber security. While these models help institutions detect security vulnerabilities, they can also pave the way for more sophisticated attacks when used by individuals with malicious intent.

Companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI are collaborating with governments and various institutions to make their models more reliable. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama announced that OpenAI’s most advanced model, GPT-5.5, has been made available to some Japanese financial institutions.

Japan’s giant banks provide access to GPT-5.5

Following his meeting with OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon in Tokyo, Japanese Finance Minister Katayama stated that this step will increase the defense capacity of the financial sector. According to the information shared by Nikkei, the country’s three largest banks, MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Mizuho Bank, are expected to benefit from this access.

It is stated that the system that OpenAI offers to financial institutions is a special version called GPT-5.5-Cyber. This model is only available to verified organizations within the scope of the company’s “Trusted Access for Cyber Security” program. Authorities predict that the model will contribute to analyzing systemic risks, quickly identifying security vulnerabilities and developing preventive measures against possible attacks.

Anthropic Mythos model is also on the agenda

Japan’s cyber security plans are not limited to OpenAI. The Minister of Finance announced that Japanese financial institutions are also expected to gain access to the Mythos model developed by Anthropic. The Mythos model can currently be used by a very limited number of organizations around the world.

This step taken by Japan reveals the importance of states working with technology companies in the new era shaped by artificial intelligence technologies. Failure to access new models on time can pose a threat to economic and national security. We may see different countries establish similar collaborations in the coming period.

How do you think the emphasis of states on artificial intelligence models in their cyber security strategies will change their digital security stability?
