It Will Be Possible to Rent an iPhone and Mac with the Apple Upgrade Program

Apple is switching to a rental model for iPhone, iPad and Mac devices with the Apple Upgrade program, which it will announce on July 28. Here are all the details of the rental system.

Apple is preparing for a fundamental change that will make it easier for users to access devices. According to the information shared by Bloomberg technology editor Mark Gurman, the company will officially announce the new rental program called “Apple Upgrade” in the US market on July 28.

This system, which is planned to be implemented in cooperation with Klarna, will allow consumers to have iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch products with monthly payments, without the need to purchase them. This strategic move aims to increase user loyalty and accelerate device cycles in Apple’s hardware market.

  • Apple is switching to a device rental model in the USA as of July 28.
  • 24-month payment plans will be offered for iPhone and Apple Watch models, and 36-month payment plans will be offered for iPad and Mac models.
  • At the end of the contract, users will have the right to return the device, purchase it or switch to a new model.

Rental Model Offers Flexible Usage Rights

The basic working principle of the system is based on giving users a wide range of flexibility during the device usage period. Within the scope of the program, long-term payment options of 24 months for iPhone and Apple Watch models and 36 months for iPad and Mac series products have been determined.

Users will be able to switch to new technological models early if they wish during the rental period. In addition, it will be possible to take over the ownership of the device completely by completing the remaining unpaid price at the end of the contract, or to terminate the contract without any additional liability by returning the device to Apple.

This new subscription-like model is considered the biggest step of Apple’s hardware servitization strategy in the technology world.

Certain Entry-Level Models Are Excluded from the Program

Some restrictions have also come to light regarding the scope of this program that Apple will implement. According to the information obtained, the basic iPad model, which is positioned as the company’s entry-level products, the standard version of the iPhone 16, Apple Watch SE and the MacBook Neo devices, which are expected to be released now, will not be included in this rental program.

It is thought that the company made this distinction in order to increase interest in upper segment and professional devices. Wanting to protect the device ecosystem, Apple continues to optimize its sales strategy through premium products.

The Apple Upgrade program aims to appeal to a wider user base by reducing the cost of access to devices.

The Doors of a New Era Are Opening in the Industry

As the subscription-based economy continues its rise around the world, Apple’s move can serve as an example for other technology manufacturers. The Apple Upgrade program, which will be supported by Klarna’s financial infrastructure, represents a valuable alternative especially for consumers who have difficulty in purchasing high-priced technological products.

Thanks to this system, the company allows users to follow current technology more easily, while also planning to provide a flow of clean devices to the second-hand market under its own control. With the official announcement to be made in the coming days, the details of the program and when it will be implemented in other regions will become clear.
