Europe’s Busiest Airport: Istanbul Airport

The success of Istanbul Airport is not limited only to daily data. In July 2026, the airport, which hosted 8.15 million passengers, surpassed London Heathrow Airport, which served 7.86 million passengers. Thus, Istanbul Airport took over the title of Europe’s busiest airport from London Heathrow, which had held it since 2023.

Capacity data also supports Istanbul Airport’s leadership in the region. According to OAG data, Istanbul Airport, which reached a capacity of 4.69 million seats in July, became the highest-capacity hub in Europe. In the same period, London Heathrow Airport ranked second with a capacity of 4.49 million seats.

Istanbul Airport, which has a current infrastructure with a capacity to host 90 million passengers annually, aims to increase this number to 200 million with the completion of all phases. The airport serves as a strategic bridge between Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

A New Center in Global Aviation

Istanbul Airport is attracting attention with the records it has broken recently. Surpassing major European aviation hubs such as Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Frankfurt, Istanbul Airport has become one of the most valuable transportation points in the region. The airport continues to strengthen Türkiye’s international relations.
