Is Liquid Glass Coming to Android?

Google Android President Sameer Samat announced that Pixel phones will not switch to Apple’s Liquid Glass design. Here’s what to expect from Android 17.

Google announced that it will not use Apple’s Liquid Glass design language on Pixel smartphones. Google Android President Sameer Samat flatly rejected these claims after an image was shared on social media claiming that this design would be used on Android devices.

In his statement regarding the prosecution in question, Samat stated that this change would not occur. Translucent details in a promotional video featuring the Android mascot created expectations among users that Google would switch to an iOS-like design.

Differences in Design Strategy

While Google continues to use its own Android operating system on Pixel devices, it also allows other manufacturers to make their own interface preferences. Manufacturers such as Oppo, Xiaomi and Samsung have integrated elements similar to Apple’s Liquid Glass design elements into their Android versions.

Apple has spread the Liquid Glass design to all its platforms with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26 and tvOS 26. Although this design change was presented as a major innovation in the Apple ecosystem, it was met with different reactions among users.

Google has been based on the Material Design language since 2014 and updates this language regularly. Introduced in 2025, Material 3 Expressive continues to reflect Google’s design approach with more natural animations and dynamic color themes.

Innovations Coming with Android 17

Although Samat denies the Liquid Glass claims, it is said that Google will make some changes in the design with Android 17. Leaks show that Google is working on an interface with a flatter and frosted glass appearance, using more blur effects.

Google will share details about Android 17 at the event it will hold on May 12. It is eagerly awaited what kind of visual innovations the new version will bring to the user interface.

Do you think it would be a better step for Google to preserve its own design language or adapt to modern trends?
