New data discovered in the macOS 26.7 release candidate has brought to light a noteworthy development in the technology world. Code noticed by MacRumors reader Pdfu points to two different Apple game controller models that Apple is allegedly working on.
The first release candidate, released in mid-August, contained references to many devices, from iPhones to Macs and new home accessories. Pdfu examined this release candidate in detail and obtained new findings that had previously been overlooked.
Devices Coded as T6502 and T1057
Two hardware components identified under GameController profiles in the code are named T6502 and T1057. These devices appear to have a D-pad, dual analog sticks, shoulder buttons, Home and Menu buttons, and analog triggers, all found in a standard game controller.
The most fundamental difference between the two devices lies in their sensor hardware. The T1057 model offers accelerometer and gyroscope support, while the T6502 model lacks these sensors.
The presence of specific hardware additions for each device in the code strengthens the possibility that these are not just placeholder codes but actual devices. Another possibility being considered is that Apple is using this hardware to test game controller support.
The company completely removed these references in the second release candidate of macOS 26.7. This continues to create uncertainty about the future of this hardware.
Is Apple Entering the Gaming World?
Although Apple has had many opportunities to produce game controllers in the past, it has not entered this field. During periods such as the launch of Apple TV, the release of Apple Arcade, or the introduction of Vision Pro, it preferred to support third-party devices rather than developing its own controller.
Apple’s strategy in the gaming world has mostly been based on expanding the existing ecosystem rather than producing its own hardware. Therefore, producing its own controller would be quite different from the company’s usual way of doing business.
In 2015, Apple TV games mandated the use of the Siri Remote as a controller, but reversed this decision shortly afterward. On the Vision Pro side, instead of designing its own controller, the company chose to collaborate with Sony to support the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers.
Today, console manufacturers like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo are quite advanced in terms of controller ergonomics. If Apple develops a game controller, features like Find My support or instant device syncing could differentiate it from Competitors.
Many users are already accustomed to using Xbox or PlayStation controllers on their computers and portable devices. Apple’s entry into this area could radically change users’ gaming habits.
