iPhone 18 Pro Camera Costs Increase by 50 Percent

The variable aperture camera lens that Apple will use in the iPhone 18 Pro series increases costs by 50 percent.

While camera technologies are rapidly developing in the smartphone market, important details about Apple’s next flagship, the iPhone 18 Pro series, are coming to light.

According to the latest reports shared by supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the original variable aperture lens that will be included in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models costs Apple 50 percent more than the existing camera modules.

This major hardware update, which has been talked about through leaks in the technology world for a long time, opens the doors to a completely new era for Apple users in portable photography.

What Does Variable Aperture Technology Offer?

Apple uses f/1.78 constant aperture in all its main cameras, from the iPhone 14 Pro generation to today’s iPhone 17 Pro series.

The amount of light entering the sensor with a fixed aperture and the depth of field in the photographs are mostly controlled by artificial software interventions. However, the variable aperture technology that will be included in the new models allows the lens aperture to physically grow or shrink.

This floating hardware section gives users much more precise control over exposure and sharpness, similar to a classic professional camera.

Natural Bokeh and Night Shots Without Software

Thanks to its variable aperture hardware, the smartphone automatically adjusts the lens according to the ambient lighting situation. In low-light night environments, the aperture is fully opened, allowing more light to enter the sensor, thus minimizing the noise problem in photographs.

In very bright environments, the aperture can be reduced to prevent overexposure and blown colors. The most exciting part occurs in Portrait mode. The need for software to blur the background is greatly reduced.

The shallow depth of field achieved directly by the physical structure of the lens itself makes it possible to capture much more natural and professional frames, free from software errors.

According to Kuo’s analysis, this moving system and new hardware structure significantly increases Apple’s production budget compared to the existing seven-element plastic lens.

Sunny Optical Becomes a Valuable Supplier for Apple

Major changes in the supply chain are also attracting the industry’s attention. China-based technology manufacturer Sunny Optical stands out as a brand new compact camera module (CCM) supplier for Apple.

According to Kuo’s report, the company meets 40 to 50 percent of the variable aperture orders of the iPhone 18 Pro series.

The company’s collaboration with Apple is not limited to the iPhone; The brand also undertakes the camera production of the very affordable new MacBook Neo model. Supply chain data shows that sales of the MacBook Neo model have far exceeded Apple’s expectations.

Kuo increased the MacBook Neo shipment assumption for 2026 from 5 million units to 10 million units, confirming the great success of this entry-level computer in the market.

2028 iPhone Plans and Different Collaborations

Sunny Optical also plays a key role in Apple’s longer-term plans.

Leaks indicate that the ultra-wide-angle camera of the iPhone models, which will be released in 2028, will abandon the current packaging technology and switch to a much more advanced COB (chip-on-board) design.

Sunny Optical is expected to be the main supplier in this new technology change. The new COB design allows the camera module to be much thinner and smaller, while also promising a superior image quality in the physical field.

On the other hand, Sunny Optical’s market network is not limited to Apple; The company is also securing hardware orders for a smartphone and a compact portable device for OpenAI.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, eagerly awaited by mobile technology enthusiasts, are expected to be officially introduced simultaneously with Apple’s first foldable smartphone in the autumn of 2026.
