The World Humanoid Robot Games held in Beijing witnessed a remarkable development in the world of technology. During the competitions, the humanoid robot Tiangong Ultra achieved a performance that surpassed Usain Bolt’s record in the 100 meters, bringing the debate about the Usain Bolt record to the forefront.
Usain Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds, set in 2009, still stands in the humanoid category. However, Tiangong Ultra reached a new level by completing this gap in 9.39 seconds in the preliminary round.
New speed records in the robotics world
Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, Tiangong Ultra demonstrated a highly impressive speed in the competition. This success allowed Honor’s Lightning robot to surpass its previous record of 9.47 seconds.
At the first World Humanoid Robot Games last year, Tiangong Ultra completed the one-on-one race in 21.5 seconds. This year’s results concretely demonstrated the rapid progress in robotics technology.
The competition was not limited to the 100-meter race but also included various disciplines showing the physical abilities of robots. Thousands of robots participated in various sports, including football, table tennis, and boxing, at the event held in Beijing.
Another noteworthy race held as part of the event was the half-marathon for humanoid robots. In this marathon, where Chinese companies participated to demonstrate the capabilities of their robots, Honor’s Lightning robot won the gold medal with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
Obstacles to be overcome before commercial use
Despite these impressive achievements, humanoid robots are not expected to be used for commercial purposes right now. During the race, robots were observed hitting guard pads directly after crossing the finish line.
Some robots were unable to move on their own after the race and had to be removed from the track with human assistance. This shows that although the robots have made great strides in speed, they need further development for integration into daily life.
