Google Takes Special Security Step for Young Users in Turkey: Age Estimation Technology Launched

Google has launched age verification technology in Turkey to protect users under 18. The new system implements automatic security restrictions.

Google is officially launching its AI-powered age estimation technology in Turkey, developed with the aim of providing children and young people with a safer digital experience. This new infrastructure, gradually rolled out starting September 15th, analyzes whether users are under 18 and automatically implements security restrictions for underage accounts.

How Does Age Estimation Technology Work and What Changes?

Based on users’ on-platform behavior and usage habits, this technology assumes whether an account belongs to an individual under 18. When the system detects that a user is underage, it directly activates the strict security protocols within the Google ecosystem without requiring manual intervention.

These defensive measures do not only stop content consumption but also focus on user shutdown and screen time management.

Automatically Enabled Restrictions

  • YouTube Sleep Time Reminders: Break and sleep reminders are enabled by default to balance late-night viewing.
  • Google Maps Timeline: The Timeline feature, which provides position history and location tracking, is completely disabled for younger accounts.
  • Personalized Ad Blocking: Targeted and personalized ad display is disabled on all Google services.
  • Google Play Content Filter: Adult apps that are not suitable for the age group are not listed in store searches and offers.

Verification Options Against Incorrect Age Detection

Google considers the potential margin of error of AI-based prediction systems. Google has also prepared objection and verification processes for users. Users who triggered the system despite being over 18 can prove their age by going to their account settings.

The age correction process offers users two main options: uploading a photo of an official identification document to the system or taking a quick selfie that verifies their facial features. After the process is completed, the user account returns to full access mode.

To be rolled out gradually to users in Turkey

This update, shaped by feedback from parents and cybersecurity experts, constitutes the Turkish leg of Google’s global child safety vision. The rollout process, which began on September 15th, will not be reflected in all accounts at once; it will be gradually activated throughout Turkey over the next few months.
