Gemini Will Control Your Computer

Gemini Will Control Your Computer

Google continues to work to turn Gemini into an assistant that can edit files and control computers on Mac.

Google is preparing to expand Gemini’s capabilities through its recently released macOS application. The company is working on new features that will allow users to organize their files and perform more operations on the computer.

An APK review by 9to5Google reveals that Gemini could become a companion tool of sorts on the Mac. This development could enable Gemini to control computer usage similar to Anthropic’s Claude Cowork feature.

A new era in the Gemini Mac application

For now, Gemini’s Mac app functions primarily as a chat interface, offering quick access via the Option + Space shortcut. Thanks to the screen sharing feature, the application can gain context about the content the user is currently seeing.

With future updates, macOS’ screen access and accessibility permissions may allow Gemini to provide direct mouse and keyboard control. Thanks to these capabilities, Gemini can directly interact with files on the computer and speed up user operations.

Integrations with Google Workspace applications can facilitate the conversion of unstructured data into Docs, Sheets and Slides formats. The company had already made its intentions clear in this field by making the Gemini 2.5 Computer Use model available to developers last October.

Competition is heating up

This move by Google stands out as part of the race to increase the dominance of artificial intelligence-supported assistants over computers. While Anthropic’s Claude Cowork feature holds the leadership in this field, OpenAI continues to work on its own super application.

Project developed by OpenAI; ChatGPT aims to combine Atlas and Codex capabilities in a single interface. Denise Dresser, the company’s senior manager, describes this project as the main experience for employees to get their work done.

These new features that Google plans for Gemini have not been officially confirmed yet. But similar trials by Competitors in the tech world suggest that such agentic assistants will become standard in the near future.
