Discord is working on a new feature that will reduce system resource usage while playing games in its desktop application. This new system, called Discord Game Mode , automatically detects when a game is running on the computer and dynamically reduces the visual load of the application.

When Game Mode is enabled, the Discord client reduces animations on the desktop and disables visual effects that are not needed during gameplay. This aims to reduce the load on the processor and graphics card, contributing to smoother gameplay.

Automatic Performance Boost During Gaming

The application remains open in the background and continues its basic functions such as voice communication. The new feature is being developed especially for users who keep Discord open all the time during gameplay.

Since rendering interface effects inevitably consumes a significant amount of system resources, terminating these processes has a positive impact on performance. When the game is closed, the application automatically returns to its normal interface behavior.

The Reduced Motion option already available in Discord allows for manual reduction of animations. However, Game Mode automatically applies these performance adjustments without requiring the user to change settings before each game.

Discord’s Performance-Oriented Updates

The company has been working for a long time to reduce the resource consumption of the desktop application. In October 2025, a comprehensive process was initiated to address memory issues in the Windows client.

As part of this work, more than nine issues, including memory leaks and locked processes, were fixed. With the improvements made, memory usage at the p95 level was reduced by approximately 5 percent.

Additionally, a temporary system that automatically restarts the client if RAM usage exceeds 4 GB was also tested. Discord states that memory consumption should remain below 1 GB during normal use.

In 2026, more substantial changes were made to improve the performance of the desktop application. Upgrading Discord to Electron 42 and changing the way the application is used resulted in approximately a 17 percent reduction in median CPU usage.

Although median memory usage increased by approximately 4 percent during this process, a significant gain was achieved on the CPU side. In addition, rendering optimizations that reduced the creation of unnecessary interface elements resulted in a further 3 percent reduction in CPU usage.

Game Mode, unlike these general optimizations, stands out as a dynamic solution that only activates when the game is running. The feature is currently under development.
