Galaxy S23 Series May Not Receive One UI 9.5 Update

Galaxy S23 Series May Not Receive One UI 9.5 Update

Samsung Galaxy S23 and 2023 model devices may not receive the One UI 9.5 update. Here are all the details about the support process and current software politics.

Samsung’s well-known flagship models released in 2023, Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S23 FE, are approaching the end of the software reinforcement cycle. According to the latest leaks from the technology world, these devices may not receive the Android 17-based One UI 9.5 interface update. The four-generation Android update promise that Samsung has committed to during the brand new launch period shows that these models will expire with the Android 17 version.

The situation in question directly affects not only the S23 series, but also other important models released in 2023, such as Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A34.

  • Samsung offers a four-generation Android update guarantee for the devices it launches in 2023.
  • The Android 17-based One UI 9.5 version may not reach these devices due to the current support policy.
  • New interface updates are now developed based on QPR updates, which are mid-release versions of Android.
  • Galaxy S24 and later series receive longer-term support with a seven-year update policy.

Update Policies Show Big Changes

Samsung and Google have recently significantly changed the way they handle operating system updates. While in the past, versions such as One UI 6.1 were built on the basic Android version, current approaches are based on intermediate versions such as Android 16 QPR2. This turns interface updates into an independent operating system development phase.

This strategic change creates a technical obstacle for older devices to receive certain interface updates.

For Galaxy S23 users, Android 17 may be the last major software update the device will receive.

Only S23 Series is Not Affected

It seems that these restrictions will not be limited to the S23 series only. Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, Galaxy A54, A34 and Tab S9 tablet series may have a similar fate as part of the update policy. It is predicted that the company will release Android 17 QPR2-based One UI 9.5 at the end of 2026. However, by this date, the four-generation support life of the 2023 model devices will have already been completed.

Users Expect Long Periodic Support

Apple’s long-term software support for older devices creates a similar expectation among Samsung users. However, Samsung has formalized its seven-year update policy only for the Galaxy S24 series and subsequent new generation devices. The Galaxy S23 series is not included in the seven-year support coverage because it was launched before this new policy came into force. This explains why devices whose hardware is still strong will be deprived of software updates.

It remains unclear whether Samsung will extend software support for 2023 model devices.

Do you think Samsung should extend the update period to seven years for devices that still offer high performance, such as the Galaxy S23 series? You can share your opinions about the effects of software support policy on device lifespan in the comments section.
