Formula 1 Will Make a Return to V8 Engines

Formula 1 Will Make a Return to V8 Engines

Formula 1 will return to V8 engines in 2031. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced that hybrid support will decrease in the new period and the sound will return.

The Formula 1 world is preparing to enter a long-awaited period of radical change. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem officially announced that the 1.6-liter V6 turbo hybrid engines used since 2014 will be replaced by new generation V8 units as of the 2030 or 2031 season.

This revolutionary decision at the top of motor sports aims to reduce hybrid support and make internal combustion engines the main power source again. Sulayem stated that the new regulations will become official in 2031, but they want to start the transition process from 2030.

  • FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced that there will be a switch to V8 engines from 2031.
  • It is planned to significantly reduce electric hybrid support in new engine units.
  • The reason why V8 engines are preferred is their lighter structure and the desire to bring back the traditional racing sound.

Regulations Radically Change Engine Structure

Although V6 turbo hybrid engines, which came into force in Formula 1 in 2014, achieved great success in terms of technical efficiency, they were constantly criticized by fans and experts.

In particular, the sound produced by the engine was not at the expected level and the increase in vehicle weight were among the factors that negatively affected the competitive spirit in sports. Taking these complaints into account, the FIA took action to offer a more pure and performance-oriented driving experience.

V8 engines will bring back both the long-awaited sound and agility to modern racing vehicles.

Why Are V8 Units Preferred?

FIA President Ben Sulayem made important statements about why V8 units were chosen instead of V10 engines. Stating that V8 engines have a much simpler, lighter and manageable architecture compared to V10s, Sulayem emphasized that this structure is more compatible with the requirements of modern Formula 1 vehicles.

In addition, the internal combustion structure of these engines will bring back that legendary engine sound that racing fans have been missing for years.

The weight of hybrid technology has become one of the main factors that make Formula 1 vehicles cumbersome in recent years. In the new era, it is expected that vehicles will be lighter as the share of electric systems decreases, which will have a positive impact on cornering performance. This simplification on the engineering side will also help teams manage their costs.

Preparations for the New Era Begin

The FIA plans to use the 2030 season as a transition year to fully comply with the regulation change. This process will cover not only the engine itself, but also the aerodynamic structure of the vehicles.

The new generation V8 engines aim to prove the usability of internal combustion engines in the future by combining them with sustainability principles.

This bold step taken for the future of sports will continue to be eagerly awaited by the whole world as the details of the technical regulations become clear. This new engine strategy of Formula 1 aims to establish a balanced bridge between the electrification trend in the automobile world and the passion for traditional racing.
