E-Book Reader Becomes a Gaming Monitor

E-Book Reader Becomes a Gaming Monitor

Modos announced its new portable E-Ink display, Modos Flow, which offers a 60Hz refresh rate. Here are the features and price of the high-performance e-paper display.

Electronic paper technology has been used for many years in devices that offer limited performance, such as e-book readers and smart watches. A company called Modos aims to change this situation and introduced the Modos Flow model, a new E-Ink display with a 60Hz refresh rate.

Modos Flow, which emerged after a six-year development process, uses a 13.3-inch E-Ink Carta 1300 panel. Offering a resolution of 3200 x 2400 pixels, the screen promises a paper-like visual experience with a pixel density of 300fpi.

Technical innovations and performance

In order for the screen to reach a 60Hz refresh rate, the Modos team designed the screen line from scratch and developed special microcontrollers. This system, which isolates the FPGA driver on a different chip, allows the display to operate at high speeds.

Instead of a global refresh system in traditional e-paper displays that waits for the entire screen to be updated, Modos uses a formula where each pixel is updated independently. This approach preserves the contrast of the screen and largely eliminates the problem of ghosting.

Offering DisplayPort support over USB-C, the device can be used without being connected to any power source thanks to its portable structure. Users can switch between special display modes for different scenarios such as web browsing, typing or viewing images.

In addition, screen settings such as saturation, front light intensity and light temperature can be controlled by the user. The screen, which also has touch and pen support, can work integrated with a PC for those who want to draw or take notes.

Pricing and launch

Modos Flow is offered to users with both black-white and color options. The device provides an alternative, especially for those who have to look at the screen all day long and want to reduce eye fatigue.

The black and white model of the project, which is currently funded through Crowd Supply, is listed with a price tag of $619 and the color model is listed with a price tag of $719. It is stated that the price of the work, which is planned to start shipping in December, may increase during the commercial sales phase.
