The era of DM against disinformation begins in X. Elon Musk will send a direct notification to those who interact with content that receives community notes.
Social media platform X is making a radical change in the Community Notes system, which is used to prevent the spread of fake news and deceptive information.
According to the official statement made by the owner of the company, Elon Musk, when a Community Note is added to a post that you interact with, like or share on the platform, the system will notify you by sending a direct message (DM).
These warnings, which until now have only been made through the standard notification panel, are moved directly to the notification box, which is a much more noticeable way, as they can go unnoticed by users.
Although Musk did not specify exactly when the feature will be activated, this breakthrough aims to make it almost impossible for users to ignore the fact check on the platform.
It’s Getting Harder to Ignore Information Pollution
After Elon Musk purchased the platform, X’s biggest trump card in the moderation and content moderation processes was Community Notes.
Musk, who wants to prevent traditional media censorship or central arbitration committees from having excessive power on the platform, prefers to leave the accuracy control entirely to the collective mind of the community.
However, in the current system, information notes added later to a post that a user likes or quotes can easily get lost in the chaos of standard notifications.
This situation changes completely with the newly planned DM update. When a Community Note is added to a post and it is said “helpful” by the community, an official X notification appears in the inbox of everyone who has come into contact with that post.
Since direct messages appear on phones as instant notifications and have to be opened by users, correction texts of deceptive content reach a much higher visibility rate.
How Does the Current Notification System Work?
In the current operation of the X platform, when a Community Note comes to a tweet you interact with, the system sends you an ordinary notification via the web or portable application. However, there are certain strict rules for sending this notification.
In order for a note to be included in the system, users with different political and world views must jointly mark that note as “useful” and the note must remain live for at least 24 hours.
At the same time, X does not forget the original owner (author) of the post. Account owners who have a correction note added to their own content will receive a special warning approximately six hours after the note goes live. However, unlike these notifications that get lost in the busy agenda, the warnings that will come directly to the notification box are expected to have a much more permanent effect.
